Why an Email List is Essential

You have more than likely heard the advice to begin building an email list when you first started your coaching business.  Many people disregard this advice in the beginning, mostly because they just don't know how to get started or simply have a fear of using new technology.  Either way, they end up kicking themselves for it later.

Building your list is needed, so you build a community of folks you can deliver emails too, hopefully filled with great content.

It is said that, "The money is in the list" for a reason.  So why is an email list so important?

Here are 7 reasons why emails are so effective:

  1. Personal – You can tailor your message to your unique subscribers. You can use your own voice to get your message out there. Your email can be as formal or informal as you want it to be.

  2. Direct - You know that your subscribers are getting your emails straight into their inbox. You don’t have to wonder if they will see your message display in a ‘feed’, as is the case with most case of social media. People check their emails countless times per day.

  3. Responsive – People are more likely to reply back to you via email since they know it is private and will be sent back to only you. You can ask specific questions in your emails that may provide valuable information to you about your subscribers.

  4. Build Traffic – People are more likely to click on the links within emails. This will help to build more traffic to your site or to a sales page of a product you are offering.

  5. Targeted – The people on your list are there because they want to hear from YOU.  Provide them with great content and useful information, and they will most likely become paying customers.

  6. Cost Effective – Building a list can literally cost you nothing, but your time.  The only investment may be an email marketing software program to assist with adding an opt-in box to your website; and for creating and scheduling your emails. There are free programs out there as well.

  7. Tracking – Software programs allow you to track when/if your subscribers open your email and whether they click on any links presented. This can assist you in determining whether you are providing the type of information your subscribers are looking for. If they are not engaged, then you may need to change up your content or present it in a different way.

Wondering where you begin? Start by having a clear understanding of your audience.  It will help you immensely in the list building process.
